Weight unit reference

  • Kilogram (kg) — the SI base unit of mass. Defined by the Planck constant. Most countries use kilograms for body weight and grocery items.
  • Gram (g) — one thousandth of a kilogram. Used for cooking, jewellery, and postal weights.
  • Pound (lb) — exactly 453.592 grams. Used for body weight in the US and UK, and for many food products in the US.
  • Ounce (oz) — exactly 28.3495 grams (avoirdupois). Used for food portion sizes and postal weights in the US.
  • Stone (st) — exactly 14 pounds (6.35029 kg). Used for body weight in the UK and Ireland.
  • Metric ton (t) — exactly 1,000 kilograms. Used in international shipping and bulk commodities.

About the Weight Converter

A weight (or, strictly speaking, mass) converter translates between metric units (tonne, kilogram, gram, milligram) and US/imperial units (pound, ounce, stone, ton). Weight conversion is one of the most common everyday calculations: cooking recipes, shipping packages, fitness tracking, and shopping all routinely cross the metric/imperial boundary.

This converter shows every unit simultaneously, so you can read any value in the system you are most comfortable with.

Mass versus weight (briefly)

Strictly, mass is the amount of matter (measured in kilograms) and weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass (measured in newtons). On Earth the two are proportional, so we use the words interchangeably in daily life. This converter, like every consumer tool, treats kilogram and pound as the same kind of quantity even though physics distinguishes them.

Stones, US tons, and metric tonnes

The stone (14 pounds) remains common in the UK and Ireland for personal weight. The US ton is 2,000 pounds; the UK long ton is 2,240 pounds; the metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kg. Always check which "ton" is meant when converting industrial or shipping quantities — the gap between US ton and metric tonne is about 10%.

How to use the Weight Converter

  1. Enter a value in any unit

Type into the field whose unit you have; every other unit updates instantly.

  2. Read all conversions together

Metric, US, and UK units appear simultaneously.

Worked examples

Example 1

Input: 70 kg

Result: 154.3 lb · 11 st 0.3 lb

A typical body-weight conversion between metric and imperial.

Example 2

Input: 1 stone

Result: 6.35 kg · 14 lb

The stone is one of the few units defined as an exact integer multiple of the pound.

Real-world use cases

  • Converting recipe quantities between US (cups, oz) and metric (g) — note: cups are volume, not weight.
  • Reading personal weight in the unit your doctor, gym, or app uses.
  • Calculating shipping costs when carriers quote per kilogram and you measure in pounds.
  • Cross-checking nutrition labels between countries.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Rough mental conversions: 1 kg ≈ 2.2 lb, 100 g ≈ 3.5 oz, 1 stone ≈ 6.35 kg.
  • Be explicit when "ton" is involved — the three different tons differ enough to matter for freight.
  • Cooking weights and volumes are not interchangeable. 1 cup of flour ≠ 1 cup of water in grams.

Frequently asked questions

Is "weight" the same as "mass"?

In everyday speech, yes. In physics, no — mass is in kilograms, weight is a force in newtons. Consumer tools follow everyday usage.

What is the difference between an ounce and a fluid ounce?

An ounce is a weight (28.35 g). A fluid ounce is a volume (about 29.57 ml in the US). Despite the similar name they measure different quantities.

How precise is the conversion?

Exact for the standardised unit definitions; rounded to the precision you display.
